Natural Gas Main Replacement

As part of our Natural Gas Main Replacement program, National Grid crews or contractors will be upgrading existing natural gas infrastructure across several Upstate New York communities.

During this process, we will be digging trenches, mainly on the road surfaces, to install the new pipes block by block. At the end of each day, we will ensure that the streets are patched up to keep them passable.

What to Expect: Gas Main Replacement

If underground gas work is being done in your area, our crews and contractors will replace the old gas pipes and service lines with strong, durable plastic and/or coated steel piping.

You will be notified by mail and/or door hangers when we are doing work to the gas network in your area. These upgrades will help us continue to provide safe and reliable natural gas service.

Work will typically take place Monday through Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., conditions permitting. Work may also be completed on weekends or after hours. Our crews may have to dig on your property to upgrade your gas service line.

Once the work is completed and the gas mains are upgraded, our crews will need to access homes or businesses to connect the service and meter to the new gas main. We will contact you to arrange a date and time to setup an appointment to complete this work.

Lastly, please note that after the work is completed, any disturbance to your property will be restored when the gas main replacement work is completed. Paving and landscaping restoration work may be completed on weekends or after hours due to scheduling timeframes.  All permanent restoration work is weather dependent, so repairs to work done in the late fall and winter will typically be completed in early spring.
