Gas Meter Exchange
As part of our commitment to providing reliable service, we are required by New York State regulations to exchange your gas meter. This meter exchange, which requires a scheduled appointment using the below online scheduling tool, is performed at no charge to you and should take approximately 45-60 minutes.
What You Can Expect The Day of the Exchange:
- We will temporarily safely shut off the gas service to your home to complete the gas meter exchange.
- Someone 18 years old or older will need to be home to grant our technician access to change the indoor gas meter (if applicable) and relight your appliances.
- You will need to restrain your pets during the visit.
- We will need clear and safe access to your gas meter and appliances.
Any contractor doing work for National Grid is required to carry ID. If someone requesting entry into your home or place of business does not show an ID card, don’t let that person in and call your local law enforcement.
The National Grid employee completing the gas meter exchange will turn off the gas to the premise and replace the existing gas meter. The technician will check the piping of your meter before and after, re-light your appliances, and ensure the appliances are operating properly and safely. The National Grid employee will have to temporarily shut off you gas service to properly exchange the meter. The gas meter exchange will take an estimated 45 – 60 minutes.

Yes, your gas service will be temporarily shut off to complete the gas meter exchange for approximately 30 – 45 minutes. The National Grid employee will turn the gas back on when complete, light up your gas appliances, and verify they are working safely and as designed.

The National Grid employee will make and/or arrange any necessary repairs to any company owned equipment at no charge to the customer.
Failure to schedule this meter exchange may lead to an interruption of your gas service until this work is executed.
