EV Charging Upgrade Program

Earn rebates for your residential EV charging station installation

We understand that the most convenient and affordable place to charge your electric vehicle is often at home. This program supports residential electric customers by providing rebates for upgrading home wiring in your garage or parking area (up to $700 for single-family homes, with additional rebates for 2-4 units) and ongoing savings once enrolled in the Off-Peak Charging program, approximately $100 annually.

Enhanced incentives are available to customers living in an Environmental Justice neighborhood or enrolled on the Discount Rate (R-2). Eligible customers can obtain these incentives through one of two pathways.

  1. Participate in our Turnkey EV Charging Installation Program intended to cover up to 100% of out-of-pocket costs to upgrade your at-home charging experience; or
  2. Complete the eligible upgrades using a licensed electrician of your choosing and applying for the rebate as outlined below.

Step 1: Review your home and eligibility

Please review the Residential EV Charging Upgrade Program terms and conditions for all requirements. In summary:

  • You must live in a single family home or 2-4 unit building with your own National Grid electric account
  • You are a landlord or property manager of a 1-4 unit building and have either a single National Grid electric account for the whole building or an electric account for the common areas (“house meter”)
  • Only wiring upgrades and charging station purchases after December 30, 2022 are eligible for rebates
  • You successfully enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program if you live in a single-family home. Tenants or landlords of 2-4 unit buildings that are not able to enroll in EV Off-Peak Charging, because they do not own or lease an EV or that have shared parking, are exempted from the EV Off-Peak Charging enrollment requirement. The Off-Peak Charging Program is available to all customers with compatible EVs or chargers, and National Grid encourages enrollment to those able to participate to ensure customers are maximizing the benefits available to them.
  • You own or lease a plug-in electric vehicle, either a battery EV or plug-in hybrid EV
  • You will not receive the $50 enrollment rebate from the Off-Peak Charging Program if you receive a rebate from the Residential EV Charging Infrastructure Program.

Step 2: Installation

Install a 240-volt outlet in the garage or parking space to receive your wiring rebate. Customers enrolled on the low-income discount rate (R-2) can receive an additional rebate for the purchase and installation of a qualified charging station.

Visit Environmental Justice Populations in Massachusetts to see if your home is located in an Environment Justice Community area.

Applicants living in an environmental justice community are eligible for the enhanced wiring rebate only if their electric vehicle purchase price was $55,000 or less. For new EVs please provide the vehicle's Purchase and Sale Agreement. For used EVs, please provide the Registry of Motor Vehicles' Registration and Title Application (Form TTLREG100_0123). Otherwise the rebate will be up to $700 or actual project cost, whichever is less.

Applicants enrolled on the R-2 rate are eligible for the enhanced wiring rebate and Smart Charger rebate only if their electric vehicle purchase price was $55,000 or less. Single Family Home and 2-4 Unit Homes connected to the Off Peak Charging Program through vehicle EVSE must be listed on the State Appliance Standards Database for Massachusetts (MA)

Step 3: Enroll in the off peak charging program

Customers must enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program to be eligible for the Residential EV Charging Infrastructure Program wiring or charger rebates. Tenants or landlords of 2-4 unit buildings that are not able to enroll in managed charging because they do not own or lease an EV or that have shared parking are exempted from the managed charging enrollment requirement. The Off-Peak Charging Program is available to all customers with compatible EVs or chargers, and National Grid encourages enrollment to those able to participate to ensure customers are maximizing the benefits available to them. Step 4: Complete application and receive rebate

Please remember to enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program. Your rebate cannot be mailed to you until EFI receives confirmation from the Off-Peak Charging Program that you have successfully enrolled, and your vehicle or charger are connected. After successfully enrolling in the Off-Peak Charging Program, you may expect your rebate check in 6-8 weeks.

Landlords applying for eligible improvements when a tenant is the account holder

In cases where the property owner has paid for eligible improvements and is not the account holder, a completed Third Party Payee form is required as part of the program documents. The Third Party Payee form is available in the online Rebate application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Renters and Landlords

Please provide your landlord with the information about the program, as the landlord typically pays for the installation of the 240v outlet(s) and/or a Level 2 EV charger. The party that pays for the installation work should also be the party to submit the rebate application. Please note: in cases where the tenant is the account holder, and the landlord/property manager pays for the project, then they will need to include a Third Party Payee Form (available in the online application) in order to receive the incentive.

Yes, you can get a rebate if you want to provide a 240v outlet(s) for your current or future tenants. Please note that if an EV charger is not installed as part of the project due to no current tenants having an EV, the requirement to enroll in the Off Peak Charging Rebate Program is waived.

In cases where the property owner has paid for eligible improvements and is not the account holder, a completed Third Party Payee form is required as part of the program documents when submitting the rebate application. This document is available in the online Rebate application.  

Off-Peak Charging Rebate Program

Customers living in single-family homes are required to enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program to receive a rebate from the Residential EV Charging Infrastructure Program for a 240-volt wiring upgrade or, for R-2 customers only, the purchase of a charging station.

Please enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program before installing a 240-volt outlet or purchasing a charging station because your project is only eligible for a rebate from the Residential EV Charging Infrastructure Program if your vehicle or charger is on the “Compatible Vehicle and Charger List”.  And National Grid cannot guarantee when, or if your vehicle or charger will be added to this list. 

Please check back often because the Off-Peak Charging Program list is regularly being updated as new vehicles and chargers are added or “Join Waitlist” at the bottom of the Off-Peak Charging Program page after confirming your vehicle or charger are not listed.  

Please note that landlords and property owners of residential 2-4 unit buildings are not required to enroll in the Off-Peak Charging Program.

Residential EV Charging Infrastructure Program Measures and Rebates

Payment for complete and accurate applications are typically issued within 60-90 days.

Yes, verification inspections of the completed project and details of the property may be required. If selected, you will be contacted directly by the inspection vendor to provide the requested information.

The invoice must be marked as paid showing the installation address, the installation electrician's name, license number and address, the date the work was completed, and the cost of labor and materials. Also, the invoice must include the voltage of the installed circuit and/or the amps serving that circuit.  

No, you only need to provide the invoice for electrician’s labor and materials if not applying for the charging station rebate.  

No, only 240-volt circuits installed for the purpose of powering an EV are eligible for a rebate. 

The rebate is only for the costs of installing the wiring for the 240-volt circuit to the parking garage or space. Customers on the low-income rate (R-2) are eligible for up to $700 for a qualified EVSE charger. 

You will not receive the $50 enrollment rebate from the Off-Peak Charging Program if you receive a rebate from the Residential EV Charging Infrastructure Program.

A single family home is defined as:

  • Single-family structures include fully detached, semi-detached (semi-attached, side-by-side), row houses, duplexes, quadruplexes, and townhouses. In order for attached units to be classified as single-family structures, each unit must:
    • Be separated by a ground-to roof wall,
    • Have a separate heating system,
    • Have individual meters for public utilities, and
    • Have no units located above or below.
    • If each unit within the building does not meet the conditions above, the building is considered multifamily.

 

2-4 housing units are defined as:

  • Residential buildings containing 2-4 units built one on top of another and those built side-by-side which do not have a ground-to-roof wall and/or have common facilities (i.e., attic, basement, heating plant, plumbing, etc. 

Examples of a single-family home, outside of the traditional single-family home would be as follows:

If you are installing a 240-volt outlet for EV charging

  • An invoice must be marked as paid showing the installation address, the installation electrician's name, license number and address, the date the work was completed, and the cost of labor and materials. 
  • The invoice must document the voltage and/or amperage of the installed circuit for the charging station (e.g. 40 amp, 240-volt circuit) 
  • A photo of the 240-volt outlet and location served by the new electrical circuit is required. 

 

If you are purchasing a qualified charging station (R-2 customer only)

  • The qualified charging station receipt or invoice must be marked as paid and include the manufacturer, model name, serial number, and purchase price. 
  • A photo of the charging station installed at the service address is required.
