Frequently Asked Questions

The purpose of the Lawrence #2 Substation Rebuild and Distribution Upgrade Project is to rebuild the existing Lawrence #2 substation and to strengthen the electric distribution system to more reliably serve our customers in the area.

The new substation will be constructed on National Grid property located at the corner of Common Street and Amesbury Street in Lawrence, MA. Minimal work will occur along the public roadway on Common Street.

The existing Lawrence #2 substation is an indoor substation that has been in operation since the 1920’s. The building and much of the station equipment is nearing the end of life, therefore a substation rebuild is needed to ensure electric reliability. The work completed on this project will enable us to support future electrical needs and to continue serving thousands of customers in the area.

Substation construction will include deliveries of equipment to and from the site located at the intersection of Common Street and Amesbury Street. Work activities include but are not limited to site preparation such as excavation and soil removal, the installation of foundations and new equipment, demolition of the existing substation, and the installation of a precast screen wall surrounding the property. In addition, work will be performed along Common Street as crews will be connecting underground electric distribution lines into the new substation infrastructure. Local police details and lane restrictions will be used to help ensure the safety of our crews and the public.

There are no expected power outages associated with this work. If an outage becomes necessary, you will be notified well in advance of any planned outages that may impact your electrical service.

Work associated with the new substation began in October of 2024 and will continue through early 2028. The project will occur in various phases, beginning with the construction of the new substation followed by the demolition of the existing indoor substation.

National Grid’s Stakeholder Management Team will continue to inform neighbors, public officials, and other stakeholders about the project.
