Gas Meter Exchange

As part of our commitment to providing reliable service, we are required by Massachusetts law to replace gas meters every seven years, even those that are located inside. This meter replacement is performed at no charge to you and should take approximately 45 minutes.

If you have received a communication from us saying that you are due for a gas meter exchange, please use our online web scheduler to schedule your meter exchange appointment.

What You Can Expect The Day of the Exchange:

  • We will temporarily safely shut off the gas service to your home to complete the gas meter replacement.

  • Someone 18 years or older must be present throughout your National Grid service visit. If a minor is present without an adult, our service technician cannot enter your premises or complete the work.

  • Our technician will require clear and safe access to the meter(s) and all gas appliances. If you do not have access to the meter or appliances, please contact your landlord/property owner and ensure they provide access to our technician during this visit.

  • If you have a service animal, they may remain with you. Otherwise, please securely restrain pets throughout the service appointment. Failure to comply could endanger our technician and may delay your service.

Any contractor doing work for National Grid is required to carry ID. If someone requesting entry into your home or place of business does not show an ID card, don’t let that person in and call your local law enforcement.

A National Grid technician will locate the meter and confirm replacement. They will then shut off gas to the house and change the meter. The entire exchange process takes approximately 45 minutes.

A technician will perform the work. All of our employees carry ID. Please ask to see the identification of anyone requesting access to your home prior to letting them inside.

Our technician will need 45 minutes to perform the exchange and relight all of your appliances.

Yes. Even if your meter is located outside, our technician will need to go inside your home to relight your appliances once your gas is turned back on.

The meter exchange is separate from other routine maintenance or servicing and even if you had a National Grid technician on-site recently for other work, they would not have exchanged the meter as part of that process.

Yes, we will need to shut off your gas service during the meter exchange. We will reconnect your service once the work is completed and relight all of your appliances.

Please notify your landlord or building manager so that they can grant our technician access to the meter.

Yes. The State of Massachusetts requires utilities to exchange gas meters every seven years to ensure reliable delivery of gas to your home.
