Enhanced Metering
National Grid will upgrade existing metering to include a meter equipped with a wireless signal which will collect electric usage data every 15 minutes.
The customer is responsible for conducting a signal strength test at the point of the meter. Test results must be submitted along with your application.
- If the Signal Strength test is 2 bars or less:
- Go directly to Service Option 2 below.
- If the Signal Strength test is 3 bars or greater:
- National Grid will replace your existing meter with a cellular interval meter.
- Interval data will be available if the customer desires to sign up for EPO (Energy Profiler Online).
Wireless Meter Test Guidelines
Fees and Enrollment
- One-time fee of $825.00 (line item on your bill)
- An annual fee for data plan $17.00 (line item on your bill)

Please note: Service under this option is only available in situations where service under Option 1 is not feasible due to technical or other logistical reasons.
National Grid will exchange the existing metering with an interval meter that will collect electric usage every 15 minutes via a landline.
- Customer must install and maintain an analog landline at the meter location. Please note that the phone number and landline maintenance are the responsibility of the customer.
- The landline must be active prior to meter exchange.
- National Grid will exchange meter and connect the interval meter to the landline.
- National Grid will call the meter daily.
- Interval data will be available if customer desires to sign up for EPO. See Energy Profile Online tab above.
Fees and Enrollment
- General Services (Commercial) = One-time fee of $333.31 (line item on your bill)
- Residential = One-time fee of $272.25 (line item on your bill)

National Grid will install a pulse output box on existing meter to allow use with your own energy management system.
- National Grid will install a pulse output box to the existing meter
- National Grid will contact the customer with the 2 & 3 wire pulse values
NOTE: Your premise may already have a pulse box installed by a previous owner. To save yourself the effort, time and cost, please verify if the meter already has an existing pulse box installed.
The pulse box is circled below and may be located anywhere along the meter; not necessarily in the lower right as noted in the picture below.
Fees and Enrollment
- General Services (Commercial) = One-time fee of $167.44 (line item on your bill)
- Residential = One-time fee of $171.38 (line item on your bill)
