Lion Factory Apartments in Troy, NY Earn National Grid Clean Heat Incentive

A Lansingburgh historic landmark is now home to more than 150 residents thanks to the commitment of Regan Development with support from the City of Troy, the State of New York, Regions Affordable Housing and National Grid.

The Lion Factory Apartments earned $1 million in incentives from National Grid through New York State’s Clean Heat Program toward a new geothermal heating and cooling system at the 133,000 square feet site, making the Lion Factory Apartments one of the largest National Grid supported geothermal projects in the state.

“When we received the application from Regan Development we knew that, not only was this a great way to provide needed housing in the City of Troy, but an opportunity to bring the latest geothermal, clean technology to a piece of the City’s history and make it a vital part of the community once again,” said National Grid Regional Executive Kim Ireland.

Geothermal heat pumps utilize the constant temperature of the earth and modern heat pump technology to provide a building’s heating and cooling. They replace the need for a fossil-fuel heating system and offer an efficient and environmentally sustainable solution.

“We know fossil fuels are finite so projects like this show what we can do with more innovative solutions to help revitalize a previously vacant, historical structure,” said Ireland.

City Of Troy Mayor Carmella R. Mantello said, “The Troy Lions Factory Housing Development Project is an achievement for our City, its residents, National Grid and New York State. This once bustling shirt and collar factory, a historic landmark, is being preserved and repurposed to provide workforce housing helping to revitalize Lansingburgh and using a sustainable energy technology that will advance State energy goals. The choice to utilize geothermal heat pumps at The Lion Factory is an exciting step towards reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and reducing our carbon footprint. Geothermal Heat Pumps have been gaining momentum throughout the US and are an efficient way to harness the earth’s renewable energy and convert it so it can be used for both heating and cooling. It is great to see the City of Troy at the forefront of this exciting technology.”

Regan Development Corporation President Larry Regan said, “A main goal of The Lion Factory Development was to work with the City of Troy leadership to improve and revitalize the historic Lansingburgh neighborhood. We are proud to have taken this blighted and long vacant historic gem and returned its luster by adding it back to the tax rolls and, in partnership with NYSHCR, NYSERDA and National Grid offering high quality, affordable, and energy efficient rental units for local residents.”

The Lion Factory is included on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of late 19th century and early 20th century industrial construction. From the late 1880s to the 1940s the building was the home of the United Shirt & Collar Company, one the world’s largest suppliers of shirt and collars, earning Troy the nickname, ‘The Collar City.’

Work on the Lion Factory Apartment building was also completed by several local contractors including: UW MarxNatural Systems Engineering and Family Danz Heating and Cooling.

The New York Clean Heat Program is an initiative that supports the state’s carbon reduction goals by offering incentives on heat pump technologies to help reduce reliance on electric resistance heating, oil, propane and natural gas.
