WALTHAM, MA - The City of Brockton and National Grid are pleased to announce a Community Solutions partnership that will create a new full-time Energy Manager position to advance the City's clean energy initiatives and sustainability goals.
This partnership, made possible by a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) awarded to National Grid in 2023, will provide funding to Brockton for this position and aid the City in taking significant steps in achieving environmental and energy efficiency objectives.
"We are incredibly grateful to be selected to partner with National Grid to create a landmark position for climate resiliency and sustainable energy. The Energy Manager position allows our City to continue to expand upon our ongoing efforts to reduce emissions, increase clean energy, and continue to strive for environmental resilience here in Brockton," said Mayor Robert Sullivan. "As an Environmental Justice community, it is integral that we continue to take advantage of the collaboration available between utilities such as National Grid and our colleagues in Washington. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to National Grid New England President Lisa Wieland and our devoted Congressman Stephen Lynch for continuing to invest in the futures, health, and safety of all Brocktonians."
The new Energy Manager for the City will identify and implement energy-saving measures, enhance the City's overall energy efficiency, and help the community reach its decarbonization goals. This role will also develop community outreach strategies to empower residents and small businesses to use energy efficiency measures and initiatives to reduce their energy burden.
"I am pleased to see the City of Brockton has been selected to partner with National Grid to help implement their sustainable energy initiatives," said U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch. "This new Energy Manager position will help advance Mayor Bob Sullivan's ongoing efforts to reduce pollution, increase clean energy, and build resiliency for the City of Brockton. I also appreciate the efforts of National Grid New England President Lisa Wieland, and I feel great satisfaction to see clean energy initiatives funded by the Federal Infrastructure Law that I supported in Washington enable my friend Mayor Bob Sullivan to invest in enterprises that impact the health, safety, and future of Brockton."
The Community Solutions partnership will support the ongoing commitment to economic growth and climate change mitigation, as well as the desire to lead by example to achieve a vibrant, cost-effective, clean energy future. First-year priorities of this agreement include energy efficiency improvements to schools, municipal buildings, small businesses, and residential properties. These programs will help reduce annual utility and maintenance costs, improve operations, and reduce carbon emissions and adverse environmental impacts.
"National Grid is proud to partner with the City of Brockton and Congressman Lynch on this critical initiative, and we look forward to years of continued collaboration," said Lisa Wieland, President of National Grid New England. "By working together, we can leverage resources and expertise to create lasting change that benefits our communities and environment."
National Grid's partnership with Brockton demonstrates the company's commitment to supporting local municipalities across the Commonwealth in the shared goal of advancing Massachusetts' climate objectives, working together to achieve a clean, equitable, and affordable energy future.
