National Grid’s Long Island External Affairs team recently presented to a coalition of the Town of Oyster Bay Senior housing program, engaging over 50 senior residents in a session focused on natural gas safety, utility scam prevention, and financial support programs for customers facing economic hardship.

The meeting included representatives from the “Golden Age” senior housing program, an initiative that provides affordable cooperative housing for seniors who meet specific income and residency requirements. This program allows residents aged 62 and older to purchase co-ops at reduced taxes and benefit from a range of social amenities, fostering an environment where seniors can continue living in their home communities.

Board members from nine senior housing communities, including Central Park Estates, Sunnylane, and County Line Villas, participated in the event. They represented neighborhoods from Bethpage, Woodbury, and Massapequa, highlighting the collective interest in staying informed about utility services and consumer protections.

A Consumer Advocate from PSEG Long Island also attended, offering insights into various assistance programs such as HEAP, EAP, and Project Warmth. These resources provide critical support for low-income residents, especially during peak heating seasons.

“Our mission is to build strong community connections and engage directly with our customers, making sure they know about every service and resource we’re here to offer,” said Lauren Perry, Long Island Public Affairs Manager, National Grid.

Attendees received copies of National Grid’s Consumer Advocacy Checklist, complete with contact information for key programs discussed during the session. As a next step, the coalition aims to have National Grid and PSEG representatives speak directly to shareholders in each community, ensuring that all senior residents have the information they need to access these valuable resources.

National Grid is committed to making a positive impact in communities and advocating for its customers.
