National Grid Contributes $75,000 Towards Construction of Sunset Park Community Hub

BROOKLYN, NY – National Grid provided a $75,000 grant to Fifth Avenue Committee, Inc. toward the construction of the state-of-the-art building that houses the Sunset Park Brooklyn Public Library branch and much needed affordable housing units in the above floors.
“The opening of the new Sunset Park Library is municipal government at its best, pairing accessible housing with educational supports for our neighborhood,” said Council Member Alexa Avilés. “This $75,000 contribution for an onsite Community Hub is welcome news as the Fifth Avenue Committee has been a key partner and steward in making the new library a reality. It will undoubtedly help them continue to cement the great legacy in the making of this community resource.”
Committed to advancing energy efficiency and fostering community well-being, National Grid identified this opportunity to address housing availability concerns and simultaneously improve the conditions of the local library serving the community by awarding a grant from the company’s Project C Neighborhood Investment Program. The previous library had outlived its useful life and there is a critical need for affordable housing in the community.
The new building not only addresses these needs, but also incorporates advanced energy efficiency measures. The residential portion of the construction project adheres to rigorous standards set by the Enterprise Green Communities Criteria (EGCC), while the library portion meets LEED-certified Silver standards. Energy Star appliances, low-flow plumbing fixtures, energy-efficient windows, and insulated wall construction further align with the National Grid mission to help customers champion energy efficiency practices across its service territory.
“This construction project aligns with National Grid’s Project C core mission of contributing to community improvement and investing in projects that positively impact both residents and the environment,” said Eileen Cifone, Director Public Affairs New York City, National Grid. “We believe in supporting endeavors that not only address community challenges but also actively contribute to meeting the state’s ambitious clean energy goals.”
Through community development grants, the National Grid Neighborhood Investment Program provides support on projects that offer community members more affordable housing and public services. National Grid New York remains dedicated to sponsoring initiatives that create lasting positive change across the state, exemplified by projects that enhance the community’s quality of life while promoting environmental sustainability.
