At an Oct. 28 event to celebrate the installation of the new EV charging stations, National Grid's Whitney Skeans, Buffalo Councilman Joel Feroleto and Lexington Co-Op's Jennifer White shared information about the collaborative effort to complete the project.

To reinforce their values and meet growing demand of EV owners in the community, Lexington Co-Op installed two level-two charging stations at its Hertel Avenue location in Buffalo. The project was completed earlier this month with assistance from National Grid's Electric Vehicle Make-Ready program, which provided incentives that covered 50 percent of the total project cost.

The stations, available for public use, include four, 240-volt charging ports, which can fully charge a vehicle in as little as six hours. The stations were installed by Montante Solar, a partner that the co-op chose for the project.

"The co-op was built on the idea of sustainability and over the last 50 years, we've aligned ourselves with efforts that honor the environment, form being proponents for improving the city's transportation infrastructure to offering recyclable and composting packaging," said Lexington Co-op Safety Compliance and Sustainability Coordinator Jenny Bruce. "The installation of these EV charging stations reinforces our values and meets the growing demand of EV owners in this community."

"Electric vehicle adoption is on the rise in New York State, and the co-op's Level 2 charging stations are proven customer amenities that can benefit co-op members and visitors who are looking to top off their EVs as they shop the market or walk the surrounding neighborhood," said Whitney Skeans, National Grid Senior Program Manager, Electric Vehicles, New York. "Working with the co-op, which is dedicated to sustainability and environmentally-friendly solutions, is a natural fit for National Grid, as we're focused on creating a path to a more affordable, reliable clean energy future through our fossil-free vision."

Skeans added that National Grid is committed to the future of clean transportation – including converting its own fleet of light-duty vehicles while also pursuing the replacement of our medium- and heavy-duty vehicles with zero carbon alternatives, all by 2030.

Initiatives such as working with customers to install EV charging stations are at the heart of
how National Grid collaborates with customers to impact our communities and community partners. They also are central to the company's Project C initiative, which was created to inspire change and create a more equitable future for our customers and communities.

"Lexington Co-Op’s new EV charging stations represent a win for everyone: their employees, their 20,000 members and customers, the immediate Hertel neighborhood, and the surrounding community," Skeans said. "It’s gratifying to work with companies like Montante and the co-op, which has an eye on the future, and is providing a necessity for the electric vehicles that will take us there."
