The Greenpoint Manufacturing Design Center (GMDC) recently broke ground on a first of its kind mixed-use development in Brooklyn’s Brownsville community. With the help of a $250,000 National Grid Cinderella Economic and Community Development grant, GMDC, in partnership with The Bridge, a nonprofit provider of mental health and human services, will develop a former industrial property into a brand-new energy-efficient mixed-use building. The 40,000 square foot facility will include affordable space for manufacturing businesses supporting up to 35 new jobs. GMDC’s project partners will own and manage 174 units of affordable housing, including 87 units of permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless New Yorkers, as well as 11,000 square feet of open green space.
“National Grid is proud to work collaboratively on this public private partnership with Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center and the development partners on this innovative project for the Brownsville community, maintaining manufacturing use, creating high quality jobs and providing affordable housing all within a brand-new energy efficient building,” said Bryan Grimaldi, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for National Grid New York. “Our Cinderella Economic and Community Development Program grants help revitalize our communities, inspiring positive change to create a more equitable future for every customer and every community where we live and work.”
This is the second GMDC industrial economic development project National Grid has supported. In 2020 GMDC received a National Grid Brownfield Redevelopment and Industrial Building Redevelopment Grant for its Ozone Park Industrial Center in Queens. National Grid’s Cinderella program is part of a suite of nine economic development programs designed to support private investment and create jobs in New York City and on Long Island. Additional information can be found here.
