National Grid Restores Power to 98 Percent of Customers Impacted by Sustained Gale-Force Wind Storm

Nov 03, 2019 - 4:00 PM

National Grid’s field force of 2,800 workers has restored power to 98 percent of the more than 300,000 customers impacted by the two-day gale-force wind storm that brought torrential rain, flooding and mud slides to portions of upstate New York. Crews have been removing uprooted trees, tree limbs, downed wires and other hazards, repairing extensive damage to utility equipment and facilities and replacing more than 300 broken poles after the storm’s devastation.

The majority of the 7,000 customers who remain without service are expected to have power restored by 11:30 p.m. today. There may be some scattered, single customer outages restored in the localized hardest hit areas into Monday. Customers can find the estimated restoration time for their specific premise on Outage Central. The company’s extensive resources will remain in the field until the last outage is repaired. Customers who are without power when their neighbors have been restored should call National Grid at 1-800-867-5222.

“We deeply appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as we continue to restore service as quickly and safely as possible in very challenging conditions,” said Melanie Littlejohn, National Grid’s New York vice president. “We also are grateful for the support and partnership of our state, county and local first-responders and emergency coordinators as well as the support and resiliency of our communities and customers.”

The company is focused on power restoration across its system, including the hardest-hit communities in Erie, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Saratoga, Schenectady, St. Lawrence, Washington and Warren counties.

Once restoration is completed, National Grid crews will remain in the field as storm clean up continues. The company reminds drivers to use extreme caution as they approach work areas, to ensure the safety of utility and other storm-response personnel. Additionally, customers are reminded to avoid downed wires. All wires should be considered live power lines and should be immediately reported to National Grid at 1-800-867-5222.
