Funding helps offset costs of energy efficiency upgrades

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – National Grid announced today an $18,000 Natural Gas Heating Energy Efficiency program incentive to Catholic Charities of Onondaga County.  The funding helps to defray the cost of the installation of a high efficiency boiler system at the Catholic Charities House of Providence facility in Syracuse, New York.  The investment in the energy efficiency upgrades will help to lower energy consumption while promoting environmental sustainability.

“It was a pleasant surprise to discover that we were eligible for this rebate, but the continued support from our generous corporate neighbor was anything but a surprise,” said Mike Melara, executive director Catholic Charities of Onondaga County. “National Grid has long been a loyal supporter of Catholic Charities of Onondaga County and we are very grateful for their continued support.”

The installation of new, high efficiency boilers will save Catholic Charities a projected 10,000 therms of natural gas annually or an estimated $4,000 per year on their energy bill. The environmental benefits from the project are equivalent to planting 1,300 trees or removing 11 motor vehicles from the road according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator.

“The new boiler system improves the working conditions for the more than 170 individuals who work every day in the House of Providence,” said Melara. “It enables us to better serve our clients too.”

National Grid’s Natural Gas Heating Energy Efficiency incentive programs provide financial incentives to residential, commercial and industrial customers for energy efficiency measures such as high efficiency furnaces, boilers and insulation.

“National Grid is thrilled to work with Catholic Charities,” said Chris Gorman, National Grid manager, Customer & Community Management. “We support initiatives like this because we are committed to sustainability and energy efficiency projects that reduce our customer’s environmental impact and energy consumption. National Grid is pleased to help improve the lives of its customers through energy efficiency measures like the upgrades at the House of Providence.”
